COLLECTING ENCOUNTER IN ZARAGOZA – V UCM COLLECTING CONFERENCE – ART HISTORY.
Organized by: Complutense University of Madrid / Ministry of Culture / Ibercaja Foundation / Goya Museum / ACCA. Art Collecting
The V Collecting Conference aims to broaden the perspective of art collecting in Spain, recognizing the richness, diversity, and specificity of cultural initiatives throughout the territory. The participation of Zaragoza and Aragonese collectors responds to the need to decentralize artistic and museological discourse, positioning Aragon as a key actor in the conservation, dissemination, and activation of contemporary heritage.
1. Aragon: a collecting tradition with its own identity
Aragon has historically been a region with strong links to collecting and patronage, both from private and institutional spheres. Featuring Aragonese collectors, curators, museum directors, and collection managers will provide visibility to a unique model of heritage management with distinct characteristics:
- Long-standing private collections, many of them open to the public or linked to cultural foundations.
- The work of Aragonese museums and centers that manage important artistic legacies, such as the IAACC Pablo Serrano.
- The role of art galleries with an impact on the national market.
- The promotion of young collectors and emerging artists through fairs, grants, and residency programs.
2. Building bridges between territories: collaboration and transfer
Including a special venue or session in Zaragoza within the framework of the V Conference will strengthen ties between Madrid and Aragon, promoting an active dialogue between art professionals from different communities.
Furthermore, this extension encourages:
- The visibility of collecting in other regions and its integration into the national cultural ecosystem.
- The promotion of the exchange of best practices and innovative experiences among agents from different backgrounds.
- The possibility of establishing collaboration networks between institutions, museums, universities, collectors, and artists from both cities.
3. Promoting emerging collecting
- Aragon is developing new generations of collectors and cultural agents. The V Conference can contribute to consolidating this movement, offering a space for training, reflection, and projection that boosts these new actors and strengthens their presence on the national stage.
4. Enriching the thematic content of the Conference
The presence of Aragonese collections will bring thematic, methodological, and geographical diversity to the presentations and round tables. Aragon can contribute in key areas such as:
- Artistic legacies managed by regional foundations
- Collecting linked to rural or peripheral contemporary art
- Public-private collaboration models in the territory
- New narratives of collecting from non-centralist contexts
Conclusion
The fact that Zaragoza and its key figures in art collecting have joined this V edition of the UCM – Art History Collecting Conference is a strategic and enriching decision. It represents a commitment to a pluralistic vision of art in Spain, highlighting the active role of Aragon as a cultural territory and strengthening networks between regions. The V Collecting Conference will be more complete, representative, and forward-looking by incorporating this valuable participation.

The V Collecting Conference, organized by the Ministry of Culture of Spain —through the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Fine Arts—, the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), and the Cultural Association of Art Collecting of Spain (ACCA), together with the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU) and the Center for Caribbean Art Studies (CEAC, Inc.) of the Dominican Republic, is designed as a leading space for reflection on collecting as one of the essential pillars of culture.
This edition proposes a unique closing in the Dominican Republic, framed within a key moment for local and regional art. Coinciding with the celebration of the 31st National Biennial of Visual Arts, the V Collecting Conference is integrated into a context of great cultural vitality and strengthens the links between Spain, the Dominican Republic, and Ibero-America.

II ACCA Patronage Award for Artwork of the “V UCM Collecting Conference – Art History 2024”.
The artist Daniel López Ramos, with the work: “Muro temporal 2024”, has been named the winner of the II ACCA Patronage Artwork Award for the V UCM Collecting Conference – Art History 2024.
The selection of the artist and their work took place on May 11, 2024, among the Undergraduate and Master’s students in Fine Arts selected to participate in the End-of-Year exhibitions of the UCM Faculty of Fine Arts 2024.
The prize funding was made possible thanks to the Patronage of the Alberto Cruz Foundation, reaffirming its commitment to supporting young creation, as well as to collecting as a form of accompaniment, care, and memory.
From among the artworks exhibited by the artists, the work of Mr. Daniel López Ramos was selected by a jury chaired by the Vice-Dean of Culture, Sports, and University Extension: Isabel María García Fernández; with the participation of the Dean of the UCM Faculty of Fine Arts: Raquel Monje Alfaro; the Vice-Dean of Students, Inclusion, Equality, and Mediation: Sonia Cabello García; the representative of the Alberto Cruz Foundation: Pía Ojea; for “ACCA. Art Collecting”: President Carmen de la Guerra, Secretary General Manuel Haro Ramos, and the Collecting Board Member: Juan José Mesa; and the artist of the I ACCA Patronage Artwork Award: Pablo Álvarez Cuesta.
The selected Artwork: “Muro temporal 2024”, addresses the complex shift in play spaces: from the physical and community sphere to the isolation of virtual spaces, and its possible consequences on learning and the emergence of various disorders during childhood. It will be the Institutional Artwork for the V UCM Collecting Conference – Art History 2024, to be held from October 24 to November 30, 2024, of which an exclusive and limited edition will be produced and presented to the speakers, museums, art centers, and collectors participating in the Conference.
